May Newsletter

From The Desk of Dr. Brown

Hello Excel Family!

Dear Donna, May is here which means it is Posture Awareness Month.

“Ugh”….. right?!

NO! This does not have to be Ugh month!

Let’s have fun with this. We challenge you toACE your posture!

What does that mean??

A = Awareness There is no “perfect posture”!!
Drop the thinking of “good or bad”. Instead think strong or weak!

Good posture is how you align and balance your body while sitting, standing AND during movement.

Posture Tip: Imagine a balloon pulling you upward, centering your head over your body. This single action will activate deep postural muscles that have been ignored for years.

Good Idea: Get a “posture picture” using our new posture grid during the month of May, FREE!

C = Control
Postural muscle strength (not just the muscles you think of when you lift weights), and balance are needed for good posture.

Posture and balance determine how you look and how well you move.

DID YOU KNOW?... Standing up utilizes 640 muscles to balance 206 bones. When your posture and balance is poor, you run the risk of spinal subluxation which can impede the function of 45 miles of nerves and/or 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Good Idea: test out your deep posture muscles and balance during the month of May. We can help you do that.

E = Environment
Is your home, work and exercise areas optimized for your body? People sit an average of 13 hours a day, sleep an average of 7 which leaves 4 hours a day to be active. Does your chair encourage erect posture? Are you sitting on your “sits” bone, or slumped onto your tailbone?

Posture Tip: try a wedge on the surface of your chair to tilt your hips forward, getting your body off your tailbone and onto your “sits” bone. Good Idea: Have us look at how you sit. Watch for future emails this month as we dive deeper into the ACEs of posture. Take advantage of our promotions by having your posture picture taken, balance tested and sitting posture analyzed!  Call for an appointment today!

Til next time…. Dr. Donna

A fun fact about Vitamin D for those trying to lose weight.

According to Dr. Mindy Pelz, author of Fast Like a Girl, and Eat Like a Girl, research finds that people with low levels of vitamin D have trouble losing weight as compared to people with higher levels of Vitamin D. ( I actually found research as far back as 2014 that shows similar finding!). Dr Pelz recommends levels of 70ng/ml (via blood test). While the NIH recommends staying below 50ng/ml, other health sources suggest that 80ng/ml is still within a normal limit.

Remember, during Covid, Dr’s were recommending getting your D upwards of 60ng/ml? Experts such as Dr. Eric Berg states the recommended dosage of Vitamin D and the normal blood levels have been way too low for decades! Dr. Berg recommends 8,895 IU Vit D every day to avoid illness, autoimmune disease and cancer. He recommends 3,000 IU per day for children.

Another time, I will do a newsletter about vitamin D, but for now, if you are having trouble losing weight, have your Vitamin D levels tested. They are probably low. Aim for 70ng/ml.
